At its foundation in 2008, the Public Institute Landscape Park Strunjan set itself the goal of opening a visitor centre as soon as possible. The possibility to restore and adapt two saltpan houses to this purpose presented itself with the European Programme for Increased Competitiveness of the Tourist Industry, in the framework of which the Public Institute submitted its project titled Strunjan Landscape Park Information Centre.
The older of the two buildings, which dates to the mid-19th century, is a typical example of saltpan architecture. On the ground floor, there used to be a salt depot; upstairs the living quarters of the saltpan worker and his family. The other, larger building, erected in the first quarter of the 20th century, has been used as a rest area for salt workers till this day. This second edifice also has a water pump installed, which transfers brine into evaporation ponds.
The renovation of the two buildings took place between the end of 2012 and autumn 2013. While the smaller now houses the park’s head offices and a visitor information centre, the larger gained a tool shed, work and rest areas for the saltpan workers, as well as an electric pump room.
