Managing the Strunjan Landscape Park also means keeping it clean. For the second year in a row, an underwater clean-up was organised on Saturday, 16 September, World Coastal, Marine and Lake Clean-up Day. With the help of more than 20 volunteer divers, we cleaned the right corner of the Strunjan Bay at the entrance to the fishing harbour. Despite the poor visibility, we pulled out 95 pieces of rubbish, of a total weight of 48 kg. The most abundant items were mussel nets, followed by pieces of hard plastic, bottles, ropes and textiles. Building materials and iron were the largest items by weight. The most interesting piece, found on the seabed was certainly a drone. The amount of waste was about 20 kg less than last year, which is at least partly due to last year’s clean-up campaign. Given the amount of waste that is dumped into the sea every year, regular clean-up campaigns are essential in order to keep our sea in the state as natural as possible.
This year’s clean-up was also carried out in cooperation with the diving association Oceandiving Koper. Okolje Piran was also very helpful in the campaign, providing us with a waste container and ensuring proper waste management. The event was organised in the framework of the POSEIDONE project, from the Interreg Italia-Slovenia programme.
